Doctor in UAE, treatment 7,000km away in Korea | World's first public telerobotic surgery trial performed for stroke

Image
In an exciting glimpse at the future of medical care, a doctor in Abu Dhabi has achieved something truly remarkable. Dr. Vitor Mendes Pereira, an experienced brain surgeon, performed a stroke treatment surgery on a simulated patient model located over 7,000 kilometers away in Seoul, South Korea! This landmark remote robotic surgery trial was made possible by special technology from XCath, a company working to advance robotic systems for stroke and brain blood vessel treatments. During a healthcare event in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Pereira expertly guided robotic instruments through the simulated arteries and skillfully removed a blood clot that would have caused a stroke. And he did this all while controlling a robotic arm from thousands of miles away from the "patient" model. In just minutes, Dr. Pereira showed the life-saving potential of this innovative long-distance surgery approach. "We simulated a stroke patient and were able to remove a clot from 7,000 km away using our ro...

Chinese company launches pilotless flights in UAE

Image
Paving the Way for Futuristic Flight. Chinese drone company EHang has been hard at work helping to establish commercial autonomous air transport in the Middle East. According to Hu Huazhi, the founder and CEO, approving test flights with passengers aboard was an important step. Speaking after their first such flight in Abu Dhabi, Hu expressed confidence that EHang would continue spearheading this new frontier of "urban air mobility". The company's electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle, the EH216-S, safely transported travelers without a pilot. Two other prototypes were also unveiled - the EH216-F for fighting high-rise fires, and cargo-carrying EH216-L. This showcase of applications from transport to logistics suggests pilotless aircraft could revolutionize many sectors. Mohamed Al Dhaheri of EHang's local partner MLG was impressed after his ride, saying the integrated technologies represent major progress for the UAE. Looking ahead, EHang will work with avi...

AI Deal Brings Together Energy and Tech Players

Image
Recently an interesting partnership was announced in the AI space. Word is that Abu Dhabi-based national oil major ADNOC has struck a deal with its AI subsidiary AIQ and UK tech firm Presight. For my understanding, Presight has pickup  majority stake of about 51% in AIQ for about over $1.4 billion. However, AIQ will still operate independently which I think it is comfortable for their employees and customers. They would have only Presight's resources and guidance to guide them forward. Presight works in the data and artificial intelligence realm, so joining forces with AIQ's focus on energy sector applications seems like a natural pairing. These kinds of collaborations between industries often lead to cool innovations. By sharing knowledge and infrastructure, the two companies will likely be in a better position to assist clients across the oil and gas field. The goal appears to be leveraging AI to help tackle important challenges in efficient and responsible ways. Sustaina...
