Syria's New Leadership Engages UAE in Rebuilding Efforts
Syria’s newly-appointed leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone call on Friday to discuss cooperative measures aimed at supporting the Syrian people during the country’s critical transitional phase.
The conversation comes shortly after al-Sharaa, head of the opposition coalition "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" (HTS), took power following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad on December 8. The coalition's success ended over 13 years of civil war, a conflict that claimed more than 500,000 lives and displaced millions. Since his appointment, al-Sharaa has made rebuilding Syria’s fractured society and economy a priority while re-establishing ties with the international community.
During the call, the UAE president expressed solidarity with Syria and pledged support for humanitarian and developmental initiatives to ease the suffering of the Syrian people. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the UAE’s readiness to assist Syria in achieving stability and economic recovery, aligning with its broader commitment to regional peace and security.
Al-Sharaa expressed gratitude for the UAE’s ongoing support and acknowledged the importance of strengthening relations with regional allies to address Syria's pressing challenges. The leader also reiterated his government's commitment to reform and reconstruction, seeking partnerships to rebuild Syria’s infrastructure and ensure the return of displaced citizens.
This follows an Arab-international meeting held in Riyadh earlier in the week, chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Syria’s new Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. The meeting brought together diplomats from the Middle East and Europe to discuss lifting sanctions, delivering humanitarian aid, and stabilizing the region.
Al-Sharaa’s leadership has sparked cautious optimism about Syria’s future as the country works to recover from years of devastation. The UAE’s engagement reflects its pivotal role in supporting regional stability and development, with its leadership committed to fostering strong partnerships to rebuild a more secure and prosperous Syria.
This evolving relationship between Syria and the UAE marks a step forward in the region’s collective efforts to address shared challenges and promote lasting peace.
