MBRSC Announces Final Preparations for MBZ-SAT Launch: A Milestone in UAE's Space Journey
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has officially announced that final preparations are underway for the much-anticipated launch of MBZ-SAT, the most advanced satellite in the region. This satellite is set to redefine the UAE’s role in space exploration and contribute significantly to the global space community.
During a press conference held at MBRSC’s headquarters in Dubai, key figures including Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, Amer AlSayegh AlGhaferi, Project Manager of MBZ-SAT, and Hessa Ali Hussain, Deputy Project Manager, unveiled the final stages of the satellite's journey. The event also highlighted the extensive work behind MBZ-SAT, which is poised to be a game-changer in Earth observation.
MBZ-SAT was first announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2020, with the satellite named in honour of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE. The satellite’s development was officially approved by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, earlier last year.
After its successful development in the UAE, MBZ-SAT was transported to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in South Korea, where it underwent rigorous environmental testing. These tests ensured that the satellite could withstand the harsh conditions of space, including Thermal Vacuum (TVAC), vibration, acoustic, and mass properties testing. The satellite was then moved to the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA for final launch preparations.
Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, remarked on the satellite’s significance, stating, “As we approach closer to the launch of MBZ-SAT, this project reflects the UAE’s unwavering vision for progress and innovation under our wise leadership. MBZ-SAT represents more than a technological achievement; it is a testament to our nation’s determination to lead in space science and contribute meaningfully to the global space community.”
MBZ-SAT, developed entirely by Emirati engineers at MBRSC, embodies the UAE’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of space science and fostering sustainable development. Equipped with state-of-the-art capabilities, MBZ-SAT will capture images with twice the precision of its predecessors and generate ten times more imagery. These advancements, supported by automated scheduling and processing, will provide critical data for a variety of sectors, including environmental monitoring, disaster management, and infrastructure development.
The satellite's enhanced features include advanced electric propulsion, a navigation system that delivers an accuracy of one meter, and a star tracking system that ensures unparalleled precision in capturing images. The high-resolution camera, combined with significantly faster data transfer speeds, makes MBZ-SAT a leader in the field of Earth observation.
In addition to technological advancements, the MBZ-SAT project has spurred economic growth in the UAE, bolstering the local aerospace ecosystem. A significant portion of the satellite’s mechanical and electronic components were produced in collaboration with UAE-based companies such as Strata, EPI, Rockford Xellerix, Halcon, Falcon, and EGA. This partnership-driven approach not only strengthens the UAE's space capabilities but also supports the transfer of vital knowledge and skills to local talent.
Amer AlSayegh AlGhaferi, Project Manager for MBZ-SAT, explained, “MBZ-SAT is a benchmark in technical innovation, featuring one of the most advanced imaging systems of its kind. It is engineered to deliver high-resolution data with unprecedented accuracy and speed, positioning it as a transformative tool for sectors like environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management.”
Once operational, MBZ-SAT will orbit in low Earth orbit, and its operations will be closely monitored by the MBRSC Mission Control Centre. The launch will serve as another significant milestone in the UAE's ambitious space programme and further establish the nation’s position as a leader in advanced space technologies.
The launch of MBZ-SAT will undoubtedly enhance the UAE's global reputation in space exploration while offering new opportunities for international collaboration, sustainable development, and scientific innovation.
