UAE Scales Up Humanitarian Aid for Sudanese Refugees in Uganda

The United Arab Emirates has intensified its humanitarian efforts for Sudanese refugees in Uganda by distributing 30,000 food baskets in the Kiryandongo camp, benefiting nearly 100,000 displaced individuals. This marks the second phase of the UAE’s humanitarian aid initiative for Sudanese refugees, which began in April 2023.

The aid delivery was overseen by His Excellency Abdullah Hassan Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Uganda, alongside senior Ugandan government officials and civil society leaders. These stakeholders commended the UAE’s steadfast commitment to providing life-saving assistance to those affected by conflict and displacement.

UAE's Commitment to Global Solidarity

Speaking during the distribution, Ambassador Al Shamsi emphasized the UAE’s dedication to global humanitarian principles, guided by the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. Al Shamsi noted that the UAE remains committed to supporting crisis-stricken communities regardless of nationality or background.

“This initiative is part of the UAE’s broader pledge to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries, valued at $100 million as announced during the International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan in Paris. It underscores our hope to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese families, including women and children, and reflects our commitment to standing by our Sudanese brothers until peace and stability are restored,” he said.

Long-Term Development Plans

Beyond immediate food relief, the UAE has unveiled a comprehensive development plan for the Kiryandongo camp to address essential needs and enhance living conditions. These projects include:

  • Drilling eight water wells to ensure access to clean water.
  • Constructing 16 health facilities to provide adequate healthcare services.

Such measures aim to create sustainable improvements for the refugees, many of whom are living under challenging conditions.

Ugandan Government’s Appreciation

His Excellency Balam Byaruhagara, Ugandan Minister of State for Youth and Children’s Affairs, expressed profound gratitude for the UAE’s contributions. He highlighted the UAE’s ongoing efforts in humanitarian and development work, noting that they complement international initiatives to alleviate the suffering of refugees.

“This generous contribution from the UAE is a testament to its leadership in addressing global crises. The support not only provides immediate relief but also lays the foundation for long-term resilience among refugees in Uganda,” said Minister Byaruhagara.

A Lifeline for Sudanese Refugees

The UAE’s actions come at a critical time when Sudanese refugees in Uganda face immense challenges, including food insecurity, limited access to clean water, and inadequate healthcare. By addressing both urgent and structural needs, the UAE reinforces its position as a global leader in humanitarian aid and development.

As efforts continue, the UAE remains steadfast in its resolve to aid displaced Sudanese communities and work towards restoring peace and stability in Sudan and its neighboring regions.
