UAE and Albania Forge New Path with Inaugural Joint Economic Committee

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Albania have inaugurated their first Joint Economic Committee (JEC) meeting in Tirana, signifying a pivotal moment in their bilateral relationship. The partnership aims to enhance trade, investment, and collaboration across critical sectors, fostering mutual economic growth and sustainable development.

A Unified Vision for Growth

The meeting, co-chaired by Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Belinda Balluku, Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, featured high-level delegations from both nations. Participants included senior officials such as Juma Al Kait, Assistant Undersecretary for International Trade Affairs, and Blendi Gonxhja, Albania’s Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi emphasized the alignment between the two nations, stating:
"The UAE and Albania are united by a shared vision to drive economic growth and sustainable development. This inaugural JEC is a foundation for actionable collaboration in key sectors, translating our vision into impactful results."

He also highlighted the UAE’s role as a gateway to global markets and invited Albanian businesses to leverage its strategic advantages. At the same time, he underscored Albania’s potential as a fertile ground for UAE investments, citing its location, economic dynamism, and integration efforts within the region.

Deputy Prime Minister Balluku echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the deepening ties and the potential for accelerated growth through joint initiatives.

Strategic Areas of Focus

The JEC discussions identified several priority sectors for collaboration, including:

1. Renewable Energy

The UAE’s Masdar and Albania’s KESH announced plans to collaborate on transformative clean energy projects. Their joint efforts aim to develop up to 3 gigawatts of solar and wind energy, starting with a 100-megawatt solar plant. This partnership reflects the nations’ shared commitment to sustainable energy and combating climate change.

2. Logistics and Infrastructure

Recognizing the strategic importance of regional connectivity, the UAE and Albania committed to enhancing trade routes. Discussions highlighted the Durres-Pristina railway line, a critical project that will streamline logistics and bolster trade across the Western Balkans.

3. Tourism and Hospitality

Both nations identified tourism as a key growth area. Plans are underway to boost cross-border travel and invest in hospitality infrastructure, strengthening cultural and economic ties while increasing Albania’s appeal as a travel destination.

4. Private Sector Engagement

A networking session organized by the Albanian Investment Development Agency (AIDA) provided a platform for UAE and Albanian businesses to explore collaboration opportunities. This interaction is expected to pave the way for stronger trade ties and mutual investments.

Impressive Trade Growth

Non-oil trade between the UAE and Albania has experienced substantial growth, reaching $80 million in 2023—a 117% increase compared to 2022. The upward trend continued in the first half of 2024, with trade valued at $66.4 million, representing a 64% year-on-year growth. These figures solidify the UAE’s position as Albania’s leading trading partner within the GCC and a key player in Albania’s broader trade with the Arab world.

Partnership for a Sustainable Future

The UAE-Albania partnership is more than a bilateral relationship—it is a strategic collaboration that prioritizes sustainability and innovation. Through joint projects in renewable energy, advanced industries, and tourism, the two nations are working to create lasting economic and environmental benefits.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi reflected on this shared mission, stating:
"By aligning our strengths, we can foster innovation, address global challenges, and contribute to a sustainable future for both our nations and the world."

The launch of the UAE-Albania Joint Economic Committee marks a turning point in their bilateral relations. It not only opens new avenues for economic growth but also sets a precedent for cooperation across sectors. As the partnership evolves, it promises to strengthen both economies, enhance regional connectivity, and contribute to global sustainable development goals.

With bold initiatives in energy, infrastructure, and trade, the UAE and Albania are poised to lead the way in building a resilient and forward-thinking economic alliance.
