Acts of Kindness Amidst the Storm | Everyday Heroes Who Stepped Up During the UAE Floods
Last week, intense rainfall battered parts of the UAE, causing widespread flooding that left many homes, roads and communities submerged under water. It was a challenging time that tested the resilience of the nation. However, emerging from the crisis has been countless inspiring stories of compassion and humanity, demonstrating the strength of the UAE's social fabric. Through acts of selflessness and volunteerism, ordinary citizens became everyday heroes, extending helping hands to those in need.
One such story that warmed the hearts of many was of veterinary nurses Ryan Cayamanda and Joshua Aldrin De Vera from Animalia Vets in Dubai. As floodwaters rose around their clinic located in Garhoud, the duo worked tirelessly for over 72 hours, wading through chest-deep waters in protective gear to save animals injured or displaced by the storms. Despite the risks, they undertook multiple overnight rescues, carrying injured cats and dogs to safety. Their relentless dedication ensured not a single animal under their care was lost.
Elsewhere, residents opened their homes to families who could not return to flood-hit housing. A young Emirati couple accommodated seven neighbors, including children and elderly parents. “We had to help how we could,” the wife said. Some communities organised food deliveries and cleaning services for affected households. Restaurants like Pizza Express and Tagine in Abu Dhabi offered free meals for weeks.
Even during Eid celebrations, acts of giving continued – one family distributed 700 gift boxes with food and supplies across four emirates. Engineers at DP World organised boat rides in Dubai to rescue people trapped in their houses. Tales of solidarity proliferated on social media under hashtags like #UAEFloods, with pictures showing volunteers wading through waters helping the disabled and elderly.
Through compassion and volunteerism, ordinary UAE residents rose to the occasion, exemplifying the nation’s humanitarian spirit. It is their selfless contributions alongside relief efforts of the authorities that enabled the country to recover swiftly from the floods’ impacts. Their kindness serves as an inspiration for us all.
