Iraq's Struggle with an Ageing Electricity Grid: Challenges and Solutions

 

Iraq has faced yet another setback in its efforts to provide reliable electricity to its citizens. The recent fire incident at the Al Bakr power station in Basra province resulted in power outages across five provinces in southern Iraq. The situation was exacerbated by soaring temperatures near 50°C, making it a critical challenge for the region. While the Ministry of Electricity managed to restore power to essential facilities like hospitals, medical centers, water, and sewage stations promptly, the incident highlights the urgent need to address the underlying issues of Iraq's ageing electricity grid.

Over the years, Iraq has consistently increased electricity production by constructing new plants annually. However, these efforts have not been sufficient to modernize the country's ageing infrastructure adequately. The recent fire incident highlights the vulnerability of the grid, and the need for comprehensive upgrades to improve reliability and reduce disruptions.

To address the challenges posed by the ageing electricity grid, Iraq must prioritize investments in sustainable and modern energy infrastructure.
