World Thalassaemia Day, observed every year on May 8, serves as a reminder of the millions of people around the world who are affected by thalassaemia. This genetic disorder impacts the body's ability to produce enough hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the blood, leading to anemia and other health complications.

According to the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), more than 80 million people worldwide carry a thalassaemia gene, and around 300,000 to 500,000 children are born with severe thalassaemia every year. The disease is most commonly found in Mediterranean countries, parts of the Middle East, and South Asia.

This year's World Thalassaemia Day, organized by the TIF, focuses on the theme of "Addressing Health Inequalities Across the Global Thalassaemia Community". The aim is to raise awareness about the impact of thalassaemia on patients and their families, and to promote access to affordable and quality healthcare for all those affected by the disease.
