The recent panel discussion on human rights in the UAE, organized by 13 international human rights groups with advisory capacity with the UN, shed light on the country's significant efforts to promote and protect human rights. The unveiling of the Shadow Report for the UAE for the 43rd Session of the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council brought together experts and specialists from various fields, including media professionals, academics, and representatives of research and opinion centers.

The panel discussion allowed for a meaningful exchange of ideas and evidence-based analysis on the UAE's accomplishments, concerns, and challenges in the area of human rights. This is an essential step in promoting the universal periodic review mechanism and the contributions of non-governmental organizations to it. The UAE's efforts and accomplishments in the areas of economic, social, cultural, and environmental rights were emphasized, as well as the value of human rights and the efforts made by the country in this area.

One of the critical topics discussed during the session was how the media can impede progress made in the area of human rights. The open conversation about the significance of the media marked the session's conclusion, and it highlighted the importance of responsible media coverage that does not fuel negative perceptions about a country's human rights situation.

The UAE's human rights report will be considered at meetings of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in May, as part of the 43rd periodic assessment. The panel discussion offered a special opportunity to comprehend the UAE's achievements in upholding its human rights duties, which are often questioned in the 24-hour international media cycle.
