UAE commitment to end polio
On July 24 2021 , the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced an additional US$9.5 million in support for Pakistan’s Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI). The funds will be used to vaccinate about 16 million children as part of door-to-door immunization campaigns in 84 most vulnerable districts, as well as an additional $376,000 to provide personal protective equipment against COVID-19 to campaign workers. The funds to be used from July to December add up to more than US$23.
The Emirates, a longtime supporter of Pakistan’s polio program and its largest donor, has provided an additional US$200 million in funding assistance since 2014.
Pakistan is one of two countries where wild-type poliovirus remains endemic.
